There once was a Halo MMO
Ensemble Studios's Dave Pottinger said in an interview that they, Ensemble Studios, were once in the process of making an Halo MMO. Microsoft had even approved the project for production. It's obvious from the way he talks about it, that this was more than just a prototype.
He also said that the game would have taken place before the events from the first Halo game, during a period where the covenant would not yet be so keen on fighting everybody and everything.
They had also taken lessons from World of Warcraft and had tried to make their game more action based, but offcourse we will never know if would be just as good or better ...
At least we can still look forward to Halo Wars on Xbox 360 and the Halo 3 add-on called Recon.
It had actually been green-lit, and then it got cancelled after that. It was a project close to Ensemble's hearts.
Ensemble has been wanting to make an MMO for a long time. Microsoft hasn't had the best track record with those.
We worked on it for a long time - we had staffed up an almost 40-person team. And then there was some reorganization at Microsoft, and the new bosses thought it wasn't the best idea any more.
