Transfer WoW-character to other servers... for a price

Posted on Friday, 23 June 2006 by Ryuken, source: Gamespot
Gamespot has put together an interview with Blizzard Producer Shane Dabiri, in which the new World of WarCraft character transfer system is being discussed.

In short; you'll be able to transfer your player characters from one server to another, but for a price (namely 25 dollars). The mmorpg World of WarCraft works with different servers around the world which can host a limited number of players at the same time (several thousand).

GS: Speaking of the fee, Blizzard is charging $25 per character transfer. Is this to prevent people from abusing the feature? Will you be able to transfer a character as much as you want, so long as you're willing to pay $25 each time? And what sorts of transfer restrictions are there in general?

Shane Dabiri: A character can only be transferred to a new realm once every six months, and once completed, a character transfer cannot be reversed. Also, there will be both character and realm restrictions. For example, you will need to be at least level 10 to transfer realms, and you’ll only be able to carry over a certain amount of gold. The cap is set at 300 gold for characters between levels 10 and 30, 1,000 gold for characters between levels 31 and 50, and characters at level 51 and above can bring a maximum of 5,000 gold.

As for realm restrictions, players can only transfer characters between realms of the same type, or from a PvP to a normal (PvE) realm. To prevent players from leveling up without the challenges of a PvP environment and then unfairly being able to make leveling up more difficult for other players on a PvP realm, transfers from a normal to a PvP realm are not permitted. Also, if a player decides to transfer from one PvP realm to another PvP realm, he/she can only do so if there is no faction violation (that is, players cannot already have a character of the opposing faction on the destination realm).

Most of the restrictions we have in place are to prevent abuse of the service, and we don't feel they will impact regular players.

Who else thinks this service should be free? It's quite a smack in the face to ask (such a high sum of) money for this kind of administrative tasks if you have 6.5 million subscribers.

If anything this service should be more expensive. While there might be some people that would really like to change servers to join friends, their are hundreds of thousands that would just take advantage. (Gold farmers that want to saturate a new realm, clans that would like to terrorize / dominate other realms etc. I think the model in place to try and deterr people from taking advantage is a good one. If I had a need to change my high lvl character then I'd pony up.

If they made it more expensive then it'd ONLY appeal to gold farmers, after all they're the only one's who would see it as affordable as they'd easily cover it and make more.

Regular players wouldn't be prepared to pay any more, let alone what they're asking for already in many cases.

I'm making an effort to stay away from MMOs: as much fun as they can be, they're bad for you. Bad for your social life, and in the end, not much is really achieved after so much time spent.

I have a MMO junkie friend, and i must say, i am worried for him. Seriously.

Euhm, I think money should never be some form of 'preventing' people to suddenly switch servers en masse. The rules Dabiri explains are enough already. Now it's some Blizzard bloke who'll make the transfer happen in probably a couple of minutes and Blizzard has earned 25 bucks? That's a big rip-off in my book. And I don't give a sh*t that even with the rules (and with a lesser or no fee at all) there might arise problems on the servers. That's a fault of the gamedesign Blizzard has copied from other mmorpg's. They should have known better in the first place.

Coughing up an extra fee so you'd save those hours spent when you want to move to another server is also just plain stupid. Blizzard should be happy that people are giving them money to be even able to play.

The real problem is that ENTIRE GUILDS are switching servers. They aren't switching just because of friends on other servers or other minor preferences.

They are switching because
1) THE Performance of some servers is terrible - a 20sec pause during a boss fight who can kill the entire group of 40 in 5 seconds

2) The population imbalances - Blizzard never capped the creation of toons on specific servers by faction so the good guys would outnumber the bad guys like 2:1 which makes it a terrible experience.

Basically, Blizzard did this so that they wouldn't have to fix servers and instead the customer has to pay AGAIN for something he was already paying for.

I think it should be free, but limited to 2 to 4 times per month. After that, charge per move. I found out I have a friend on another server and I can't switch because I can't justify the $$ to do so.
