Tretton shoots down PS3 price cut rumours

Posted on Wednesday, 8 July 2009 by Speed, source: FastCompany
Sony CEO Jack Tretton has had enough. He's fed up with all the constant rumours and nagging about possible upcoming price cuts for the PS3.

Speaking with MCV, the man had the following to say:
We feel that we're sacrificing the short term to pay dividends in the long term. People are having short-term thinking--the platform is not even three years old. It was $599; it's now $399. The focus on pricing is something we appreciate, but you have to have the conviction and the confidence that you are on the right path for the long term and ultimately you'll get all the consumers you want.
If you look at the pricing of the PS2 back in the days, history shows us the following:
- 2000: PS2 gets launched at $299
- 2002: PS2 drops to $199
- 2003: PS2 pricing at $179
- 2004: PS2 Slim gets launched at $149
- 2006: PS2 gets priced at $129
- 2009: PS2 available for $99

So after 3 years into the life of the PS2, the suggested retail price had dropped from $299 to $179 which is $120 less = 40% less.

PS3 has gone from $599 to $399 which is $200 less = 33% less.

Jack, when comparing history, we're 7% behind in price drop!

He s partly right, all the rumors and nagging about a price drop is getting irritating....
But i hope they'll launch the slim version this year

Playstation 2 package comes with the Playstation 2 console, Dual Shock 2 controller, audio/video cord, and AC power cord. For $299 you can expect to get pretty much the bare necessities, but securing a Playstation 2 is the hardest part

yea, due to short supply, PS2 even got sold at over 1.000 dollars in US. But official pricing was $299 :)

Um I never knew the ps2 was that expensive, i got it as a gift. and it never occurred to me to see how much it really was. and btw SONY just let go of 1,000's of employee's I dont think a price cut is gonna happen. Sony is broke. Maybe they could have charged $10 a year to sign into their network.
