UMD Dying rapidly
Next-Gen.biz has word that the NPD Group has released a report which states that although many people bought a PSP with UMD movies functionality in their head, little are actually using the feature on a consistent basis
Guess the UMD format will not survive for long anymore, especially seeing that support from retail chains is dropping rapidly and that even Sony is thinking of another format to use in their next handheld...
More consumer indifference to the UMD format is outlined in the report. One-third of PSP owners who don't own non-videogame UMD content say that they are likely to purchase a UMD in the "near future", but on the other hand don't really care about the format that the content is delivered on. NPD also points out how retailers and studios are steadily dropping UMD support.
In addition, the report revealed that gaming and downloaded music files are the top uses for the handheld -- good news for game publishers and developers.
