US hardware sales February
The NPD has disclosed the American consoles hardware sales for February and once more it's Nintendo that takes the crown.
Some 587.000 NDS handhelds were sold, about twice as much as the PSP (243.000). The Wii came in second with 432.000 consoles sold, followed by the good old PlayStation 2 (351.000).
Next up were the PS3 with 280.000 units sold and the Xbox 360 came in last with 254.000 consoles. Microsoft will however be glad that the two best-selling games were X360 titles, namely Call of Duty 4 and Devil May Cry 4. Wii Play took the bronze, DMC4 for PS3 came in forth, and the top-10 was rounded out by Guitar Hero III Wii, Mario & Sonic at the Olympics DS, and X360 titles Lost Odyssey en Turok.
Microsoft noted that most money was spent on Xbox 360s and games, with an attach rate van of more than seven games per console, about double the figure of the Wii and PS3! According to them, that's the reason why the 360 is still the best platform. Well, as long as it makes them happy...
Sony didn't agree (duh) and Jack Tretton stated that "Consumers are recognising the tremendous value of PS3 and we believe that Blu-ray becoming the high-def format of choice was the tipping point for many consumers". With GT5 Prologue, GTA IV and MGS4, 2008 should be the year of the PS3.
Nintendo smiled and stated that they are the number one, bar none. And right they are.
It's also rather curious whether those three titles (a glorified demo, a multiplatform game and -granted- one of the biggest releases this year) will make the PS3 come out on top. Sony will likely benefit from Blu-Ray's victory in the HD war and it's up to them to keep their momentum.
