USA Today: Wii beat PS3

Posted on Wednesday, 29 November 2006 by Speed, source: USA Today
USA Today have given their sights on the current console wars and for all they know, Nintendo's Wii console is beating the crap out of Sony's PS3

Nintendo's launch "has been probably a little better than expected and Sony's has been a little bit more disappointing," McNealy says. "If you have to rank on who won this holiday so far, Microsoft is first, Nintendo a close second and Sony a distant third, which is a rare statement."

Many gave up on getting a PS3 and opted for the Wii, according to New Media Strategies, a research firm that monitored Web activity related to the systems. And 38% who sought a PS3 and were subjected "to sleep deprivation, lost wages, missed classes, the elements and even muggings came away from the experience with a bitter taste in their mouths," the report says.

About 49% of online discussions were favorable to Wii, compared with 27% for PS3. Says the firm's Sam Huxley: "The hype machine went too far."

I particularly like that last quote :)

Both systems sold out so I don't see how they can actually say that either system is currently winning. The fact that people wanted a PS3 as badly as they did is why they were subjected to sleep deprivation, etc. If PS3 has shipped the same number of units as Nintendo they would have sold them all and people would have still experienced the exact same thing while trying to get their hands on one. Since the two systems are geared towards different markets I'm not sure how accurate it is to say that people wanting a PS3 turned to a Wii. If anything they would turn to a 360 because it's in direct competition to the PS3 and offers a similar gaming experience and options.

The paragraph mentioning Huxley seems a bit vague to draw anything from. Were those discussions comparing the two systems or were they just "discussions"? And by saying that, were they written by reporters or actual people looking for the system. I've seen a pile of reports about things as obvious as the Wii outselling the PS3. They shipped more so obviously they sold more. If things like this are included it would skew the results a rediculous amount. From what I've seen people who want what the PS3 offers have some minor complaints (most of which can be solved by updates), but are generally pretty happy with the system. People who want what the Wii offers are also pretty much happy. If you want high powered HD graphics, get a PS3 or Xbox (which currently displays better graphics), if you want Nintendo style games with a new type of controller, get a Nintendo. People who don't know what they want (parents mostly) will buy whatever is available or cheaper so they'll pick up a Nintendo.

Unless your TV supports 720p, your probably better off with a Nintendo anyways. I'm sure your aware by now that Sony lied about 1080p60 and currently only one game supports it. Like 7 other games are 1080i. All the rest are 720p, including "fall of man". 720p60 will be the standard because it its supports MUCH higher framerates and uses less memory, which the PS3 is deficient on. Plus, due to the high development costs of PS3 games, they will want to make games easily portable to the Xbox360 well. All 360 games are 720p60.

I dont think that PS3 owners "turned" to the Wii, the Wii itself was a pretty hot item and difficult to find. As for the reason people were willing to camp out and endure "lost wages, sleep deprevation" ect was because these are the same people are that going to sell their PS3 online for $2000 profit. Some people could justify 4 days of uncomfortable living for a 2 grand pay off.
