Ubisoft DRM cracked *Updated*
It seems that Ubisoft Entertainment's anti-piracy measure has been again a futile attempt to stop hackers.
CNet is reporting that a hacked version of Assassins Creed 2 has surfaced on the internet with the DRM completely removed.
Update: It seems that the hackers, who release games under the pirate tag SKIDROW, were bluffing and that their bluff has been called by Steam Underground Community CS.BIN.RU.
It was already known for some time that there is a DRM server emulator out there. This server makes the DRM believe that you are validated by the Ubisoft server but it only works for as long as you know server addresses and apparently different servers unlock different parts so it was far from bulletproof and quite the hassle.
The pirates have stolen the database from this server emulator and injected the values into the DRM routines for Assassins Creed 2.
It seems that Ubi's DRM will get to live another day!
CNet is reporting that a hacked version of Assassins Creed 2 has surfaced on the internet with the DRM completely removed.
It requires users to download and install a modified version of the game's executable file to their computers. These modified game files, alongside a crack that can be applied to a retail version of the game, were uploaded to various file-sharing sites late Tuesday evening.
The hackers, going under the name of Skid Row also included a message towards Ubisoft:"Thank you Ubisoft, this was quiete [sic] a challenge for us, but nothing stops the leading force from doing what we do. Next time focus on the game and not on the DRM. It was probably horrible for all legit users. We just make their lifes [sic] easier."
