Valve: DRM is dumb
Posted on Wednesday, 3 December 2008 by Speed, source: Ih8evilstuff
In an email conversation with a fan, Valve's Gabe Newell clearly states that he finds DRM to be dumb and that there's a "groundswell" to abandon it.
As far as DRM goes, most DRM strategies are just dumb. The goal should be to create greater value for customers through service value (make it easy for me to play my games whenever and wherever I want to), not by decreasing the value of a product (maybe I'll be able to play my game and maybe I won't).
We really really discourage other developers and publishes from using the broken DRM offerings, and in general there is a groundswell to abandon those approaches.
Let's hope Gabe is right and that companies like EA will abandon DRM just like the copy protection system from back in the days where you needed to find specific words in a manual :)We really really discourage other developers and publishes from using the broken DRM offerings, and in general there is a groundswell to abandon those approaches.
