Valve: Prices went down, sales went up, big-time

During a DICE keynote speech Valve Software co-founder Gabe Newell commented on last weekend's sale in their steam online store.

Amongst some other info found on G4TV Newell noted that the half-off sale made Left 4 Dead purchases go up a crazy 3000%.

Furthermore the whole steam store saw an interesting parallel between percentage off and percentages sales increase.

10% sale = 35% increase in sales (real dollars, not units shipped)

25% sale = 245% increase in sales

50% sale = 320% increase in sales

75% sale = 1470% increase in sales

In the somewhat more weird part of the keynote, Gabe revealed that they hired an experimental psychologist 'to come up with new ways to excite users with pricing models and sales'.

Say what? A shrink playing little mind games to make us buy their crap? Genius!
