Valve releases pirated version of HL2

Posted on Thursday, 18 November 2004 by Speed, source: Fragland
Just when you think you've seen everything, something like this happens... Filefront is reporting that Valve Software has released a pirated version of their own game, Half-Life 2, on the internet through Bittorrent as a kind of "experiment". Here's what Gabe Newell had to say:
We're running a bit of an experiment. We're keeping track of the accounts that do this and will be shutting them off.
Well, things are going great, aren't they ? Not only are HL2's authentication servers having major problems which results in people not being able to play due to not getting registered (what about people without internet connection ???) but now Valve are warezing their own game as some kind of anti-pirating technique ?

What's your point? The problems with the authentication server have been fixed already. The music industry pulls this off, and it's their right to do so, so I don't see why it would be any different for the game industry. Games like HL2 deserve to be bought, and everything that pisses off warezers is a good thing to me.

I don't understand the purpose.
If the account is valid, why can't a guy grab HL² on bittorent instead of steam ?
He can have a valid cd key for HL², and not loving steam enough to get 4gigas.

Why is this game banned for people who don't have internet connection ? Although some people may not know it, the majority of the world (including majorities in all Western countries) still do NOT have an internet connection.

Simple, to cut back warez. If they have the money to run such a service and develop such an astounding game, I really don't mind. Also, this 'warez release' by Valve is probably a hoax. That would be entrapment and could get Valve into court.

it's not a hoax. Filefront contacted Gabe Newell themselves and he commented on the matter as quoted.

After a year or so, Valve will probably release a new edition of Half-Life2 where you don't need to go online first in order to play single player.

Every warez-sucker will then probably have bought the game already, and Valve earns even more profit.

Paranoia...plain and simple. I wonder if the folks at Valve stay up pacing the floor at night, sweating, unable to sleep, worrying that some kid, somewhere, may be playing their game without forking over his $50 first....they should be putting their energies into creating HL3, not playing internet-detective...
