Valve's Source engine not so state-of-the-art ?

Posted on Monday, 14 July 2003 by Speed, source: Fragland
Over at City17 is an article where they take a look at the Source Engine from Valve which will be used for Half-Life 2 and apparantly the engine isn't all that fancy as people might think
As you can see, the Combine Soldier's foot is sticking through the foot of his dead partner, which leads many to believe that even in Half-Life 2, a model's boundaries are still defined by the skeleton, and not the model itself. Quite a disappointment, considering this bug is over 5 years old, and it still hasn't been addressed.

Yet another very displeasing thing I noticed in one of the Half-Life 2 screenshots was that landscapes will still probably be very "edgy," just as in the original.
So what do you think ? Is Valve trying to capture us all with some fancy lighting effects which make old games look really cool or will they indeed deliver something extraordinary ?

I'm sorry but anyone who saw the e3 preview movies won't care shit about the technicalities. It looked great, even on shitty quality quicktime movs.

well valve sure shows us their fancy shite, instead of the less awesome parts of their engine. But (i am not a fanboy! :S) i still beleve in the gameplay, wich is by far the most important aspect of an engine.
So if i want kick ass gfx i will go for Doom III, but if i want a great single player and an engine wich is made for the modding community, i will sure have to choose for HL2.
DO notice i am not some sort of cs fanboy that never played half life rofl
in fact i am a die hard quaker

I'll take a 5 year old bug from Valve over any of the other mindless garbage i've seen come out in the last year - any day of the week.
