Viacom getting rid of Harmonix
Viacom has announced its latest financials and they've resulted in a rather unexpected move.
Following a drop of 59% in net profits, the media giant has decided to sell off Rock Band 3 developer Harmonix.
The official document states the following:
I guess that's a way to make any balance sheet look fantastic and EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich seems to have the same feeling. This is what he told Joystiq:
Following a drop of 59% in net profits, the media giant has decided to sell off Rock Band 3 developer Harmonix.
The official document states the following:
Viacom also announced that it plans to sell Harmonix, which developed the Rock Band music video game franchise. Accordingly, the Company reclassified the business as a discontinued operation and has recast its results from previous periods to reflect this change.
Quarterly net earnings attributable to Viacom and Fiscal 2010 net earnings attributable to Viacom were $189 million and $854 million respectively, including the impact of reclassifying Harmonix as a discontinued operation.
The official documents don't mention anything of a 59% decrease in profits, but the Wall Street Journal has come up with that number as Viacom's official documents only talk about "continuing operations" while Harmonix has been listed as discontinued. Quarterly net earnings attributable to Viacom and Fiscal 2010 net earnings attributable to Viacom were $189 million and $854 million respectively, including the impact of reclassifying Harmonix as a discontinued operation.
I guess that's a way to make any balance sheet look fantastic and EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich seems to have the same feeling. This is what he told Joystiq:
"It is just a way for them to classify future losses so the impact of losses do not psychologically impact the sentiment towards the company. If Viacom said, we lost 'X million,' investors would be concerned about their long-term health. However, by saying we lost 'X million' from discontinued operations, it would convey to investors that the losses are attributed to an area of their business they no longer plan to be a part of."
So start guessing: who will be buying Harmonix? In other news:
