Videogame plots need to be stupid

Posted on Wednesday, 2 April 2008 by Speed, source: CVG
According to Ken Levine, creative director of Bioshock, the storyline in games is only an additional factor to increase the interest and should be kept as simple as possible if you want people to keep up.
"If you want people to follow your plot, it has to be really f****** stupid", Levine says in the latest issue of PC Zone.

About Bioshock he states that the storyline spread over a period of 70 years in which three civil wars happened, but those that have played the game know that there's little left from that.

Personally I do like extensive and complicated storylines. I'm one of those gamers that has the intellectual capacity to understand what it's really all about. On the other hand, the occasional Serious Sam can entertain me as well though :)

I'm glad The Witcher didn't follow this trend.

In a way I agree, for the average game to be entertaining, the plot needs to be only have surprises in it. As long as its somewhat logical and not predictable. On the other hand, I do occasionally enjoy an rpg with a deep plot and lots of story behind it.
