Warhammer 40.000: Dawn of War - Dark Crusade will be released this Fall.
The two(!) new playable races (Necron and Tau) were already revealed some time ago but now more interesting tidbits about the singleplayer campaign have popped up.
In addition to the two new playable races, Dark Crusade will feature an all-new single player campaign centering on the conquest of a "meta-map", with each territory captured giving tangible rewards to the occupying force. A greatly expanded multiplayer component and a completely unique economy model for the Necrons will present gamers with the most compelling Dawn of War game to-date.
"With Dark Crusade we have taken a very different and exciting route with the single player game, allowing the player to conquer the globe as any of the seven unique playable races," said Ron Moravek, vice president THQ, general manager Relic Entertainment.
That means you can expect some sort of Total War-, Rise of Nations-, Empire At War-like campaign setup, the way nearly every RTS is done nowadays apparently. Relic definitely steps away from the linear approach of the original game and the semi-linear story of the first expansion (Winter Assault). Great news is that all seven races will get their starting point and different storyline. Sounds like a big hurdle to overcome for Relic but they say they are aiming for the best expansion pack ever made, so who knows that they might succeed. "With Dark Crusade we have taken a very different and exciting route with the single player game, allowing the player to conquer the globe as any of the seven unique playable races," said Ron Moravek, vice president THQ, general manager Relic Entertainment.
Here is a bit about the story:
The bitter war for domination of the remote planet Kronus rages between Tau, Orks, Space Marines, Eldar, Imperial Guard and Chaos whilst deep in their tombs beneath the surface the sinister Necrons are awakening after 60 million years in stasis. Now, in the 41st millennium, they have found a galaxy teeming with life; a galaxy ripe for harvesting.
Gamespot has more detailed pre-E3 impressions of the new races' heroes and units. A low-res trailer has surfaced on the net too, you can download (15 MB) it here. Warhammer 40.000: Dawn of War - Dark Crusade will be released this Fall.
