Warhammer 40.000 MMORPG in development

Posted on Thursday, 1 March 2007 by Ryuken, source: Gamespot
Some time ago, we reported that Relic was hiring folks for an Warhammer 40.000 MMO-title. Now, it appears that another THQ-owned company, Vigil Games, is working on the project.

THQ has just recently extended its Warhammer 40k license with Games Workshop to 2013. Probably because the Dawn of War-RTS franchise (made by Relic) has been hugely successful, with the original game and the two expansions combined have sold over 2 million units worldwide.

The agreement serves to both extend and expand upon THQ’s previous agreement with Games Workshop for the Warhammer 40,000 license, which encompassed interactive rights to console and handheld systems, as well as Windows PC. Additional rights under the newly announced agreement include wireless devices and all online rights, including massively multiplayer (MMO) games. It also includes the same rights to Games Workshop’s Gorkamorka and Necromunda properties.

“Our success in creating Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War as a category leading Real-Time Strategy experience for PC gamers is just the beginning,” said Kelly Flock, executive vice president of worldwide publishing, THQ. “The Warhammer 40,000 universe provides a richness of worlds, characters and stories and level of depth that translates perfectly to interactive experiences across multiple genres and systems. We see a lot of opportunity to build new and different games based on Games Workshop’s fantastic property in the coming years, beginning with our newly announced MMO.”

“We are delighted to be able to announce the extension of our very successful partnership with THQ,” said Andy Jones, Head of Group Legal and Licensing for Games Workshop. “By creating such vibrant and ground-breaking games based on our long-established worlds, stories and characters, THQ can introduce the Warhammer 40,000 Intellectual Property to a whole new audience, while providing our existing Hobbyists with an exciting new way to interact with the dark and gothic universe which they already know and love.”

So, who are the guys at Vigil Games (located in Austin, Texas), which got acquired by THQ last year? Well, it consists of "at least" David Adams, previously the creator/director of several projects for NCSoft, and famed comic artist Joe Madureira, known for his work on Marvel Comic's Uncanny X-Men and his creator-owned comic series Battle Chasers. Back in the days of the overtake it was stated that Vigil was working on a next-gen title scheduled for release in 2008. So that must have been the WH40k MMORPG.

Gamespot has more intel on the WH40k deal but there really isn't anything new in it (there are some hints to a Dawn of War sequel but that's been known for a while already).
