Warhammer, Led Zeppelin of the MMOs

In a recent interview with Destructoid, John Drescher, senior designer of Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning, made an interesting comparisson.

Many MMO's have tried to equal World of Warcraft's success throughout the years, this is no secret. According to Drescher however, Warhammer doesn't want to accomplish this by winning over WoW customers, but instead, tries to profile itself differently, aiming for a different customer base.

The comparisson he made, is one between The Beatles, the mainstream success story, and Led Zeppelin, the darker, heavier stuff.

In his words:
"We're trying to offer you a harder, darker, heavier sort of experience. We're trying to offer you the kind of music you'd listen to down in your basement with your friends, with a black light on and maybe some illicit substances. We are not trying to be the thing that you all slow dance to at your high school prom. If that means we take a couple of players from World of Warcraft, great, but if it means that we get a group of people that have been waiting for an experience like ours then we're just as happy with that."
So Warhammer doesn't try to compete with WoW directly, curious how that will go.

First of all, he is required to say that their "not competing with WoW", because as the industry has seen time and time again, thats a fatal mistake. The market is over saturated with failing fantasy based MMOs that the concept is getting worn out fast. Thanks to Vanguard and Age of Conan many gamers have already tried out new fantasy MMOs that have failed miserably for them. As a new up and coming MMO this leaves WAR at a pretty big disadvantage because it means that less players are willing to give another MMO a chance. Competing with WoW means trying to chip away at a 10 million+ subscription player base (which represents only a fraction of the number of game sales) and the huge amount of momentum the game has with all of its existing and new content.

Thats not an uphill battle, its like trying to climb a vertical wall with a fork.

One day WoW is going to cool down and not be as popular as it is now and it will be much easier for new MMOs to come out and be successful let alone survive. Until that day comes, no other new fantasy MMO will be able to compete with the player base and momentum that WoW has already established.

But the reality is that WAR is competing with WoW. They have created an MMO, that requires a monthly subscription with content based on the fantasy orcs/elves landscape. Bottom line is that no gamer is going to have a subscription to both of these games. Now if he wants to say that their game is darker and has its own identity thats fine, but if he was going to be honest with himself he knows that his game is in direct competition with WoW whether he likes it or not. If he had been one of the developers of EVE, then he could say that his game is not in direct competition with WoW. But even EVE is indirectly competing with WoW because at the end of the month most gamers are only going to choose to keep one MMO subscription, so they are still indirectly competing for that one spot to occupy our reoccurring subscription.
