Why the PSP is about to die

Posted on Thursday, 20 July 2006 by Speed, source: GWN
Over at GWN is an article that talks about why the PSP is quickly going downhill.

Overall, following reasons are the main ones mentioned in the piece:
  • High development costs
  • High pricing
  • Loading Times
  • Death of UMD movies
  • Little really good & original games

  • A PSP system will set you back $250, and with two games that brings the total to $330 dollars. In October or possibly November the Nintendo Wii will be released, though no official price has been announced. We’ll assume it to be $225 (most predictions have it between $200 and $250). With two games (assuming that each game will be $40 dollars) that would take your total to $305. Next up the PS3 will launch at a price of $600 and with two games (assuming each game will be $50 dollars) your total will be $700. We can’t leave out the Xbox 360 with a price tag of $400 and two games bringing the total to $500 dollars. Finally the DS Lite’s total with two games comes to $200 dollars.

What does all this mean exactly? It means you can own a Nintendo Wii and two games for less or a Nintendo DS and not only two but six games for about the same price as a PSP with two games

Can't say I disagree with what is said...

    was it ever alive?

I know at least 10 friends* who bought a PSP, played and toyed with it some time, and then sold it 2nd hand ...

It's really not something that'll be around forever ...

    * make that people that I know :p

The biggest sign of the PSPs impending death was (for me) the fact that I know 6 people who own one, yet never play it. (Much less buy any software for the thing.)

I know about a dozen people with DSs, and they're always playing the things. (Mario Kart tournies after lunch is the current craze.)

Yea, I've noticed that aswell, my friends who bought a DS play it quite frequently, but those who bought a PSP stopped using it after about 2-3 months.

I think the available games are at least partly to blame. Most of the released games are just recycled PS2 material and there simply isn't as many interesting games available for PSP as there are for DS.
