Why we game...
Ever wondered why we play videogames? A couple of psychologists from the University of Rochesterdid and questioned 1000 gamers, including MMOG lovers, why they spend time in the virtual world of games on a daily basis.
The result of their paper states that people aren't just looking for "fun" when gaming but rather do it because they get the feeling of having achieved something, the liberty they experience while playing, and the social connections they can make.
Especially men and women occupied with multiplayer online games showed a large interest in the social aspect of gaming.
Seeing the success of things like Achievements and a game like for instance World of Warcraft, these results don't even look that incredible.
The result of their paper states that people aren't just looking for "fun" when gaming but rather do it because they get the feeling of having achieved something, the liberty they experience while playing, and the social connections they can make.
"It's our contention that the psychological 'pull' of games is largely due to their capacity to engender feelings of autonomy, competence and relatedness," said Ryan, the lead investigator in four new studies about gaming.
Especially men and women occupied with multiplayer online games showed a large interest in the social aspect of gaming.
The researchers found that for MMO gamers in particular, interrelations among players provided "an important satisfaction that promotes a sense of presence, game enjoyment and an intention for future play."

Same and for fun, but for having achieved something? I don't think so lol, it's not like that for me anyway.

Don't know if any of you play Eve Online but in that game you really can get a good sense of achievement. I guess in many MMORPG's because of the time taken to get a new weapon, ship, build an alliance, or whatever it may be. And because there are others playing to who you can show off, and not just some dumb AI, you get a real sense of achievement.
But then again you need to spend dozens of hours on MMORPGs and their grind, hard to be a casual gamer, except for in Eve, where you don't grind for skill points, only cash :)
