Wii at E3 wasn't Wii

Posted on Thursday, 18 May 2006 by Speed, source: Nintendo Forums
Over at the Nintendo Forums is a thread where pictures are shown that the Wii games that Nintendo was showing off, were actually not running on Wii hardware.

Right, Wii consoles that were shown were actually empty boxes while the games actually were played on GameCubes running on Wii development kits.

Guess that would explain the poor graphics... Let's hope things get better when Wii gets released.

I wouldn't be too hopeful of that. Nintendo aren't exactly known to create breakthrough graphics.

Agreed, my guess is that it won't be that much graphically more impressive than Gamecube.

Then I would rather get an Xbox360, can't stand the kids games that Nintendo makes.

But then again, I am not the console type really. PC for the win :P

I think there is a lot of over estimation of the power of the PS3 and XBOX360 and a lot of under estimation of the real power of the WII. First of all, the demo were on development kit since the final WII hardware is not available even for developper at this time. For the people that are interested, this is the spec of the console (base on the information provide by a developper in the Montreal area)

The CPU will be a modified single core 2.0 GHz G5 (IBM 970FX). This chip was developped for an apple laptop product but with annoncement of Apple to go with Intel, the CPU development focuss completely on the new WII chip. Currently, the chip is stable at 1.6 and 1.8 GHz but the gold will have to get 2GHz chip in the final hardware. They have chosen a single core for easy programming and cost efficiently. anyway, most of the game developped for XBOX 360 and PS3 does not used the multicore possibility yet.

The GPU is based on similar tecnhology then the XBOX 360 system except the GPU board will have specific feature developed for Nintendo. It suppose to creat more "realistic" image. I am not sure what that mean but...I guess we will see!!! Also, this card will be able to display games at 720P...even if Nintendo is downplaying the HD thing, the system will be capable of going at these resolution. However, Nintendo will not impose any basic graphic resultion to developpers exept some specific QA thing. nintendo is currently judging that it is better to have game running at 480P with 60 frame per second than having 720P running at 20 to 30 frame per second. They have also advise some developpers that currently develop product for PS3 and/or XBOX 360 that their system will be able to run it... It remains to be seen. Nintendo believe that a familly will not spend 2000$ and up on an HD TV simply to play games. So if the HD tv represent only 10% of the current market, they believe that any way, the WII will be most likley connected to a standard or EDTV. The other option will be to connect the system to a computer screen. This is an interesting solution to get HD image without spending substantial amount of money. You can buy a 20inch used CTC screen for less then 50$ now.

All these information are very interesting. And the killer will be the price. Apparently, it will sell for 249$, will include WII Sports and credits for dowload classic games.
