Windows 7 pricier than Vista
Windows 7, a lot of ink has flown on the subject and that can mostly be attributed to the bad reception of Windows Vista.
The plethora of complaints people have or had about Vista have been turned into praise when it comes to Windows 7. It no longer is a sluggish and incompatible piece of software, it is a streamlined tool that helps you in your day to day computer usage. At least, that's what the loving words of those who tried the Windows 7 beta lead to conclude.
There's a flipside to this success story though.
Darrel Ward, director of product management for the business clients with Dell, told CNet the price of Windows 7 will be higher than the one we paid for Windows Vista. According to him, this increased cost is not such a great idea:
On the other hand Ward mentioned a lot of his customers are anxiously waiting for Windows 7, something that was not the case with Vista when it arrived. With all the positive comments about Windows 7 expectations are running high.
Considering more than half of Dells business clients still run Windows XP, an operating system that isn't getting any younger either, Microsoft can expect many future customers. Ward's criticism then is mainly that Windows 7, with a price increase, will have more difficulties attaining a substantial market share right off the bat at the launch.

"If there's one thing that may influence adoption, make things slower or cause customers to pause, it's that generally the ASPs (average selling price) of the operating systems are higher than they were for Vista and XP. In tough economic times, I think it's naive to believe that you can increase your prices on average and then still see a strong swell than if you held prices flat or even lowered them."
