Windows Live only on Vista

Posted on Wednesday, 14 March 2007 by Ryuken, source: Gamesindustry.biz
Microsoft issued a statement today with more details about the Windows Live service. It will launch on May 8 in the USA and on May 18 in Europe. More importantly though is that it will require Vista to run, according to what Gamesindustry.biz heard from a MS representative.

“Five years ago, we began building a service that now defines the bar for online gameplay,” said Peter Moore, corporate vice president of the Interactive Entertainment Business in the Entertainment and Devices Division at Microsoft. “The benefits of expanding Xbox LIVE to Games for Windows titles is twofold: We’re bringing together two communities that share a passion for playing online games, and we’re enhancing the online experience for PC gamers who have long desired seamless game and voice connectivity — it’s a win for everyone.”

Silver Membership Features
• Single gamertag
• Common gamer profile
• Common gamerscore
• Single player achievements
• Private chat via text and voice
• Common friends list and online presence
• PC only multiplayer including browsing a list of active PC games

Gold Membership Features
• All Silver membership features
• Multiplayer matchmaking with friends
• TrueSkill™ matchmaking
• Multiplayer achievements
• Cross-platform gameplay

So, is there actually anything new here besides the achievements (and of course the cross-platform pay-to-play feature) when you compare Live to traditional PC matchmaking services? I don't think so. It seems that only if you already have an Xbox Live Gold account (which will automatically transfer over Windows Live too) there are some clear benefits.

For your interest; the games mentioned by MS that'll fully support Windows Live and which we obviously should be anxiously awaiting are Halo 2, Shadowrun and UNO. Only the latter two will support cross-platform play.

It sucks that you can play online with the silver membership with Vista but not with Xbox Live.
