WoW sucks for RPG'ers

Posted on Friday, 11 March 2005 by Speed, source: KillerBetties
After a lot of criticism was unleashed on World of Warcraft due to server problems, now KillerBetties have put up an article to criticise the game by saying that it's all but decent to do some serious roleplaying (which is quite hard seeing that the game is in fact a Massive Multiplayer Role-Playing Game).

"Great! I'm in the spirit realm! Neat…I can talk to this spirit angel thing. What is this spirit angel thing? Well, no matter…spirits are everywhere in the world; I'm sure this one is just a rebirth spirit of some sort. Right. But I don't want to get sick and have to pay a ton of coin (which I probably don't have) to repair my armor; so, I'll just run back to my "corpse" and re-mesh my spirit to my flesh."

So there I am running back—albeit not far—to my corpse. The little grave icon on my minimap shows me right where I died, and luckily I know my way around enough to get there. As I get closer to my body, a little pop-up box flashes up on my screen. Do I want to resurrect now? Looking around, I spy my body. It doesn't appear to be around any baddies. Sure! All right…let's leave this spirit realm behind.

So I click the little button, am revived, and look to see…my skeleton? What the hell is my skeleton doing there? Do I still have all my bones? Yep…I sure do. Man…that's…just…odd.

Although the writer clearly states that WoW is beautiful and a good "game", she makes it quite obvious why it isn't suited for role-playing. Quite a decent read...

Monotonous, repetitive tasks, being in a guild just means ya got PCs tellin ya what to do instead of NPCs.

This isn't fun, it's work, but unlike work this costs money instead of earning you any. Cancelled in the first 2 weeks.

"Wait til ya get ta 60 and do raiding then the game is fun"

Shouldn't I be able to enjoy the game...I don't know, as soon as I start playing? It's a game afterall

It's a complete waste of time...that you have to pay for. It's fun for a day or two, but then you realize that you just keep repeating the same missions rehased into more difficult versions. After all that leveling you spent hours upon hours doing, suddenly a mile away, the bad guys are a few levels above you. You level off them, and suddenly...yep, bad guys are a few levels above you. Not only that but the missions are all the same. They're all remixes of a game people play with their dogs, FETCH.
