World of Warcraft: WotLK launched, drama and joy all around
Last night at midnight, many many (many!) gamers around the world finally got their hands on what must have been the most anticipated expansion ever: World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King.
BBC News went to the HMV store on Oxford street, London, which saw the biggest midnight gaming event ever. Hordes (pun intended) of people waited in line for hours to be amongst the first to get some playtime in the new icy lands that open up with the expansion.
Although it was a night that brought loads of joy and enthusiasm with many players dressing up like characters, chatting and just being thrilled about things to come, it ended with an anticlimax at midnight.
Scott Hamshere had been camping at the store from 6am and was the first in line to buy the game but when money time came and the doors opened, he got overwhelmed and collapsed.
A spokesman of HMV confirmed that this will have been the biggest event ever once the sales results come in. He also said that the involvement of Blizzard had been of unseen proportions which shows their commitment to the game and its community.
As an ex addict to the game who also stood in the freezing cold for hours to get his hands on the previous expansion, then going home and playing all night long until going off to work, I can only say that I feel both happy and sad at the same time for those who are still caught in the tight grip of the game. Pray for me that I don't fall again for its many temptations.
