XBLA-games more expensive, 'due to quality'
Posted on Monday, 29 August 2011 by Speed, source: GamesIndustry
Lately most XBLA-titles may have gotten positive word, but one of the side effects is that you have to keep digging deeper in your wallet. In 2009 the number of games for 1200 MS Points ($15) was at 21, but in 2010 that became 27 (of 85). For those who like numbers: that's an increase from 24% to 32%.
Microsoft's Chris Charla states the rise of pricing goes together with an increase in quality. And quality costs money, as we all know.
Microsoft's Chris Charla states the rise of pricing goes together with an increase in quality. And quality costs money, as we all know.
"If you look at Live Arcade, and do the math, and look at the publicly available sales numbers, you can see that average prices on XBLA have crept up over the last few years, which has been an interesting trend because on some app markets there's been a race to zero as fast as possible,"
"We've seen a little bit of the opposite happening, I don't really know where prices are going to go - ultimately, that's set by the market - but it has been really gratifying to see that people are willing to a premium price for digital content."
Charla also said to be happy with the spectacular rise XBLA games have been seeing on Metacritic. Since 2008 the digital titles have been scoring 12 points higher:"We've seen a little bit of the opposite happening, I don't really know where prices are going to go - ultimately, that's set by the market - but it has been really gratifying to see that people are willing to a premium price for digital content."
"Sometimes, when [developers] talk about Live Arcade they're like, 'We want to do a boxed quality game on Live Arcade', and I'm like, 'What does that mean?' I can point at a bunch of 38 and 42 and 56 metacritic scoring boxed games, so it actually kind of pisses me off."
