Xbox 360 was already unstable at launch

Dean Takahashi is a writer who's specialised in the Xbox-console from Microsoft. He already wrote two books about this subject, in wich the reader gets clarification about a few things and in the last chapter he takes up the launch of the Xbox 360.

Microsoft was experiencing problems with the notorious Red Ring of Death before the launch. They tried to fix all problems in the beta-fase, but did not succeed. The console had an intolerable rate of percentage that indicates how big the chance was that it would break down. In July 2007, a year and a half after the launch, Microsoft offered the Xbox 360-owners the possibility to repair their consoles, free of charge. It wasn't free for Microsoft though... They had to come up with the sum of one billion dollars.

Almost 68% of the consoles experienced problems when they were still in production, and only 16% of the CPUs were working like they should work. In the last fase of production, Microsoft even carried through some last minute changes. Room was still to be created for the wireless controllers, as well as for a HDD. Due to this, the design had to be altered quickly, causing there was barely any space left for the cooling system. Microsoft didn't have the time to solve all problems, because their console had to be the first next-gen console on the market.

i had 1 of these faulty xbox 360s it broke 2 times and had microsoft repair it. when the xbox 360 elite came out i jus traded it in straight away , with no probs since, i know they had 2 get the console out quick but if they knew it was so bad why not delay untill they could have fixed most major issues, or if not at least desgin the console properly from the start.

mine has just broken down for the second time since I bought it. I am about to send it off for repair all at microsofts expense. I am quite happy that microsofts extended warranty will last me through for another year and a half.

By the time the 3 year warranty expires, the price will be so low, I will be able to purchase a new one with loose change and pocket lint. So I am more than happy with microsofts warranty policy carrying me through to the consoles cheap end of the cycle...
