No more Cell Processor for Sony?
Posted on Saturday, 26 December 2009 by Speed, source: AndriaSang
Technology writer Hiroshige Goto is reporting that Sony may very well drop the Cell processor for the successor to the PS3.
Ever since the launch of the Playstation 3, Sony has been claiming it can do just about anything but make coffee and it's almost equal to God when it comes to processing power. However, for their next console, they seem to be interested in something else.
Goto also stated that due to the fact that the Big Three (Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft) are now looking at new architectures, the next generation of consoles will probably arrive somewhere in 2012.
Ever since the launch of the Playstation 3, Sony has been claiming it can do just about anything but make coffee and it's almost equal to God when it comes to processing power. However, for their next console, they seem to be interested in something else.
According to Goto, Sony, IBM and Toshiba recognized some of the problems programmers were having with Cell and, early on, came up with a couple of plans for fixing the issues.
...
Goto says there are signs that some time this summer, Sony was looking into using this updated SPU design in the core of the PS4. At the very least, he says, the design was a strong candidate.
However, he's recently started hearing about other plans. While he's unable to get into the specifics, at a broad level, the new plans call for a PC-like multicore setup.
Sony going for PC-like multicore setup? I wonder whether that means we'll be seeing x86 chips arriving in the next Playstation or - which seems more plausible - Sony still using Cell but added coprocessors that will act in a way multicore PC chips work....

Making new pheriphicals that will last only one year and a half, don´t think so.
I think Nintendo will come with a new one around 2012, Microsoft around 2013 and Sony 2014
