Pachter: Mafia 2 won't be profitable

Posted on Tuesday, 31 August 2010 by Speed, source: IndustryGamers
Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter hardly ever doesn't have an opinion on something so it shouldn't come as a surprise that he's got one about Illusion Softworks' sequel, Mafia 2.

According to the man, the game may have sold great in its first week, but due to an average metacritic score of 74% and taning interest from consumers (no idea where he gets that, ed.) he doubts it will ever become profitable for 2K Games:
"Mafia II’s average Metacritic score of 74 is well below expectations, and consumer interest appears to be waning, as the game’s position has dropped in many best-seller lists in its first week. With six years in development, we believe the game is unlikely to achieve profitability,"
In fact, Pachter isn't only negative about Mafia 2 but overall development times for Take2 games in general:
"Game delays have become the norm at Take-Two, and we expect the company to announce a shift in release dates for LA Noire out of 2010 and into 2011,"
He also believes the constant delays and absence of news regarding the next Grand Theft Auto are hurting Take2's stock price:
"Once the company can demonstrate a path to consistent profitability, we will become more constructive. With longer development cycles, Take-Two has a profitability threshold higher than its peers. We believe that the company must focus on streamlining its development process and providing better visibility on future game releases. Despite a multitude of recent game announcements, Take-Two’s share price has taken a battering recently, reflecting investor disappointment that there has been no update on the next Grand Theft Auto, which appears to have potentially slipped to 2012."
We'll see.

Where is this 'waning' consumer interest? You can't support your own argument with generalisations made from thin air. I don't really think metacritic scores affect sales to the extent Pachter implies, marketing is a major factor, which explains why movies like Transformers 2 gain any profit. Mafia 2 has a decent marketing campaign on the go, and from my visit to major retailer Tesco earlier I see that it is being promoted well in stores. Personally I think Mafia 2 is a heavily underrated game with scores mainly based on its differences to GTA, which I feel are kind of missing the point, and was the same problem the original game faced.

Mafia II is a great game but it is lacking certain elements, for such a massive world, the lack of free-roam or non-linearity gameplay is the downfall. There are shops in the game which have really little to no use, you will never need to buy a weapon, change the plates of your car, tune your car up, etc.

The game needs more side missions.
