Hellgate: London's "optional" subscription fees

Fansite HellgateGuru has picked up info from the latest Games for Windows magazine in which more details of the action rpg Hellgate: London were revealed.

The most important newsbit is the pricing of the optional subscription service of the game (called "Elite"). Be aware that a huge chunk of the online part remains free but Elite subscribers get some extras for $9.95 a month:

- Elite subscribers pay $9.95 a month
- 24/7 phone- and internet-support
- No (server) queues for elite subscribers, with preference over non-paying customers
- 3 chars per account for non-elites, 12 for elite-customers
- Elite subscribers can store up to 40 items (instead of 20 for non-subscribers), which can be accessed from any char in an account-wide item vault.
- Visible distinction from other players. Elite subscribers are recognisable from their equipment and may trade subscriber-only equipment to other elite subscribers.
- VIP-Shuttles to remote areas
- Housing and founding of guilds are enabled for subscribers. Elite subscribers may attain officer/leader priviledges within their guild.
- Elite subscribers have access to additional game modes, including Hardcore mode.
- Elite subscribers and non-subscribers can play with each other.
- Costs actually depend on where you live. Subscription fees in the Asian market will cost considerably less, in accordance to the market conditions and expectations of the players and local publishers within the region.

The income from this service will allow developer Flagship Studios to create more content after the game has been released, whether they'll release that content to all players or only to subscribers isn't known yet.

One of the devs had this to say as well:

*atrial – That info is correct. Again, the game will have as robust an online game as, say, Diablo II, for free. The Elite plan comes with some extra perks, but really doesn’t detract from the core game at all. Ultimately, all of the extra content we have planned for the future requires funding, as do the servers, support, etc., hence a monthly fee. But we’re passionate about making the game, even on the free plan, one that’s great from every aspect. I think once the game comes out and you get a feel for the game, you’ll be happy on either plan, depending on what you’re looking for. ^_^

*Lothar98 – Elite members will have additional content, though it wasn’t all specified in the magazine article. And the customer support thing – it’s 24/7 for the Elite, though everyone will have access to support for free.

*snoboader38 – I am! Sorry to be late. We’re super busy filming some behind-the-scenes content for the game which has me away from my computer a lot!

Thanks to those who understand what we’re trying to do. Trust me when I say that if everything could be free, we’d be all for it. But with all the upcoming content we have planned, we need to be able to keep FSS alive to make it! I’m trying to get a detailed breakdown of the plans so that it’s clear to everyone that even the free plan gives you a whole, not-gimped game. Really.

All of us here truly appreciate your guys’ support! ^_^

I guess that's understandable though the Diablo II crowd might be pissed to see that only Elite subscribers can go Hardcore mode and can have more than three character slots.

Flahship has failed with the online service. There are huge numbers of users that contine to get an "error connecting to server" message and can't play online. This will go down as one of the worst launches in history.
