EA softens up Mass Effect copy protection
After numerous consumer concerns EA and Bioware have decided to drop the periodical online authentication of their sci-fi singleplayer RPG Mass Effect.
Whereas originally the PC version of ME would validate the game every 10 days online it will now only validate right after installation and whenever you install an official content pack (the first DLC, "Bring Down The Sky", will be offered as a free download). As reported before, there will be no DVD-check and you will be able to simulataneously install/activate/play the game on three different PC's. The same copy protection scheme will be in place for Spore as well.
Anyway, for a good FAQ and explanation on the subject, see this post of Bioware community Manager Jay Watamaniuk.

Q: What happens when I’ve reached the maximum # of computers for my game and I need more, say due to theft of computer, computer crashes, etc?
A: EA customer service is on hand to supply any additional authorizations that are warranted. This will be done on a case-by-case basis by contacting customer support.
Q: Why are BioWare and EA implementing this new authentication process?
A: This serves to protect our software from piracy. It has the added benefit of allowing consumers to activate the game on multiple machines without needing the DVD in the drive when playing the game.
Q: Did BioWare and EA change their mind on requiring that the game be re-authorized every 10 days?
A: BioWare has always listened very closely to its fans and we made this decision to ensure we are delivering the best possible experience to them. To all the fans including our many friends in the armed services and internationally who expressed concerns that they would not be able re-authenticate as often as required, EA and BioWare want you to know that your feedback is important to us.
Sounds like a case of listening to your potential customers, the new EA approach? We like it to be honest.A: EA customer service is on hand to supply any additional authorizations that are warranted. This will be done on a case-by-case basis by contacting customer support.

Ok well listen to me now, (and I'm sure many others would agree) get rid of that 3 times activate token thing. I want a full working product that won't conk out on me, you think this will stop the pirates? It's just making it worse for the people who do purchase your games.
