AMD to bring console-like gaming to PC?

Posted on Monday, 19 May 2008 by Speed, source: Shacknews
Since AMD isn't making much waves in the desktop PC market lately (their CPUs are no match in gaming performance for Intel at the moment) they're looking at other ways for publicity. One of those seems to be AMD Game!.

This is supposed to simplify hardware buying for mainstream consumers and new systems as well as components will have AMD Game! or AMD! Game Ultra badges which will inform customers whether or not the machine can play "today's games"

"We're trying to help people identify PCs that are really ready to play the latest games," AMD desktop gaming strategist Brent Barry explained to Shacknews. "Basically, to bring a little bit of that console-like simplicity to the mainstream gamers."

"We looked at a couple of different ways that we could try to identify what you needed," said Barry. "One idea was essentially to do an AMD Game! 1, AMD Game! 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and keep going like that. Another one was to do AMD Game! 2007, AMD Game! 2008, AMD Game! 2009, those kinds of things."

"At the end of the day, we decided all of those pieces ended up increasing complexity," added Barry. "We make it really easy for [the mainstream] to identify a gaming PC. It's not just that we love capital letters and exclamation marks, which we obviously do."
And here's what the current specs for the specific badges look like:

AMD Game!
Minimum 30FPS performance at 1280 x 1024 for tested games.

Min Specs:
-AMD Athlon X2 process 5600+
-ATI Radeon HD 3650
-AMD 770 chipset or Nvidia nForce 500 series chipset
-2GB DDR2

AMD Game! Ultra
Minimum 30FPS at 1600 x 1200 for tested games.

Min Specs:
-AMD Phenom X4 9650
-ATI Radeon HD 3870
-AMD 770 chipset
-2GB DDR2

Tested games: Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, Half-Life 2: Episode Two, World of Warcraft, Lineage II, Sins of a Solar Empire, Command and Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars, Sims 2 Deluxe, Zoo Tycoon 2
While this has nothing to do with the PC Gaming Alliance, companies like Microsoft, Alienware and Acer have already stated to be involved in the initiative.

Personally I think this is more about marketing crap than anything else, but maybe you have a different opinion on that?

Sure its a bit of marketing, but one of the bigggest things hurting PC's these days is the amount of confusing crap out there. Look at NVdia's 8000 series cards. Man. How many different cards could they release? 8200 all the way to 8800 with like 2-5 diff versions of each, plus diff versions with diff amounts of memory.

They want to make it easier for ppl who arent as pc adept, or dont have the time or want to research all the hardware to build a good pc (how many ppl got ripped off by the crappy performance of the 8600's? lol), go for it. Means more ppl keeping pc gaming alive, and we need a boost.

And how many ppl are getting ripped off by the 9800 gx2's right now as well. By the time games come out that use that kind of power, the next gen of cards will be out and they will be buying them. What a waste of money. Im telling everyone to get 9600gt's or 9800gtx's and save the cash for beer. lol

Getting the right hardware is an art and that means you have to stay on top knowledge wise which means most ppl are lost; I'm advising ppl in a gaming squad on upgrading and buying new hardware and most are totally lost so AMD's initiative is very needed, only problem is they have to simplify something complicated so you have to take it with a grain of salt...at the same time AMD will of course use it to market themselves but who wouldn't? You think Intel would not in a similar situation?

So in short: what is this any different from Alienware, former Dell XPS systems or HP Gaming Systems that are being marketed as "ultimate game pc's" while you can go to a local hardware shop and with some knowledge (or decent advise) buy a pc in parts and get a faster system at a cheaper price?
