Piracy is PC's hidden benefit

Posted on Thursday, 21 August 2008 by Speed, source: Gamesindustry.biz
id Software CEO Todd Hollenshead stated in an interview that he believes PC hardware manufacturers see piracy on PC as a "hidden benefit" when buying their hardware.

Q: It's the barrier-for-entry thing isn't it? It's really easy to pirate PC games whereas console games are much harder to pirate so the returns are better. What can PC hardware manufacturers do to make it harder for pirates?

Todd Hollenshead: There's lots of things that they could do but typically just they just line up on the wrong side of the argument in my opinion. They have lots of reasons as to why they do that, but I think that there's been this dirty little secret among hardware manufacturers, which is that the perception of free content - even if you're supposed to pay for it on PCs - is some sort hidden benefit that you get when you buy a PC, like a right to download music for free or a right to download pirated movies and games.

Q: You think they're secretly happy about it?

Todd Hollenshead: Yeah I think they are.

I look at it this way. Devs and publishers are always going off about how its everyone elses fault cause of piracy, but most don't really do the things that encourage player to actually BUY the games.

Look at Valve or BF2/BF2142 compared to Call of Duty 4. With the first 3 games you have to have an online account married to your cd key to play, where in CoD4 you don't. That makes playing online with pirated copies SUPER easy, and frankly their own damn fault.

Thats basically the same as me leaving my front door open when I go on vacation. That would be my own stupid fault would it not? These devs that bitch and complain should look inwards. Stop blaming everyone else for your own shortcomings.

How is CoD4 "like leaving your door open", you need either a cracked server or a stolen cdkey to get on.

Its more like having your window broken or your door lock-picked.

:P

The problem is'nt that he is not right, he is right actually. The problem is that he does'nt come with any trace of solution to that situation after making such a statement. Making such charge against the hardware manifacturers without any more substance to back up his claims is just irrevelant. This kind of speech will just vanish into the wild cause it does'nt bring up anything, while it actually hold truth, which is sad. I actually am, like many others, pirating and spending my money on hardware. But if I did'nt have the hardware, I would'nt be able to run his or other compagnies games decently. So when you think about it, is his statment bringing anything new to the situation, or chaning anything? no. I would'nt buy a game i could'nt run decently. I will tell you mister Id CEO, I pretty much like Id Software, John Carmack in particular, but you have to push the matter much more far then this if you want to make any kind of impact. The broadband ISPs have a much bigger responsability in the piracy case than the hardware manifacturers have. The hardware manifacturers actually benifits from the piracy situation, but without being really aware of it. If they are guilty of something, it is to not denounce it, and not to encourage it. Check out the ISPs first. Tne internet is a great information and communication tool right, but what is the point in having a high bandwith connection if it's not to pirate content, there is no other point. You see, there should be some kind of piracy taxe, and everyones with some kind of brain knows it. The situation with hardware manifacturers is totally different, there should be a coallission between software and hardware manifacturers to back each others of, and there is already one that have been created around last year, including the big players in the industry like Microsoft, AMD-ATI and Intel. So well...what's really the point behind that accusation of yours?
