Microsoft wins from Sony's losses
Posted on Wednesday, 27 August 2008 by Speed, source: Gamesindustry.biz
Microsoft has managed to recuperate 20 million dollars from the payment they did to Immersion regarding the rumble technology. And where did the money come from? Indeed, Sony!
Apparently, the settlement Microsoft and Immersion made regarding the patent infringement on rumble technology back in 2003 also included a clause that if Immersion managed to also retrieve money from Sony for a similar suit, quite a bundle of cash would flow back to Microsoft.
Sony was later on ordered to pay no less than 90 million dollars to Immersion, of which Microsoft now has received 20 million.
Funny, and good business thinking from Microsoft :)

Sony was later on ordered to pay no less than 90 million dollars to Immersion, of which Microsoft now has received 20 million.
part of that agreement included a clause that required Immersion to pay Microsoft a chunk of any cash the rumble company obtained from Sony as part of additional litigation.
Sony was subsequently ordered to pay Immersion USD 90 million in damages, but Immersion denied that payment triggered the agreement clause with Microsoft - which the latter disputed and sued Immersion over.
Now Immersion has settled that dispute by paying Microsoft USD 20.75 million as a one-time payment and joining the company's Certified Partner Program.
Conclusion: Microsoft got rumble technology for only 5 million dollars, Immersion is getting rich, and Sony is paying tons and tons of money only to get the Dualshock3 out the door, a controller with - and I quote Sony - previous-gen rumble.Sony was subsequently ordered to pay Immersion USD 90 million in damages, but Immersion denied that payment triggered the agreement clause with Microsoft - which the latter disputed and sued Immersion over.
Now Immersion has settled that dispute by paying Microsoft USD 20.75 million as a one-time payment and joining the company's Certified Partner Program.
