PS3 does worse in 2008 than Xbox and PS2
Research company Nielsen has released the results of one of their investigations and it appears that in 2008 the most played console was the Playstation2. Yes, you've read that right, the PS2!
Runners-up are the Xbox360 and the Wii while the PS3 doesn't even manage to stay ahead of the original Xbox.
The full methodology for the investigation is as follows:
Runners-up are the Xbox360 and the Wii while the PS3 doesn't even manage to stay ahead of the original Xbox.
1. PlayStation 2 - 31.7% Usage Minutes
2. Xbox 360 - 17.2% Usage Minutes
3. Wii - 13.4% Usage Minutes
4. Xbox - 9.7% Usage Minutes
5. PlayStation 3 - 7.3% Usage Minutes
6. GameCube - 4.6% Usage Minutes
7. Other - 16.2% Usage Minutes
Of course you can take this with a grain of salt but always nice to know what's going on with the console wars in the US.2. Xbox 360 - 17.2% Usage Minutes
3. Wii - 13.4% Usage Minutes
4. Xbox - 9.7% Usage Minutes
5. PlayStation 3 - 7.3% Usage Minutes
6. GameCube - 4.6% Usage Minutes
7. Other - 16.2% Usage Minutes
The full methodology for the investigation is as follows:
Upon the debut of its GamePlay Metrics tracking in 2007, Nielsen explained its methodology as it appears below. It is not known how or if that changed in 2008.
Nielsen GamePlay Metrics Methodologies as of 2007
Nielsen GamePlay Metrics uses console data collected from the Nielsen's People Meter TV sample combined with Nielsen GamePlay Metrics' proprietary audio signature library that matches the unique audio signature of every game tracked on the six most widely available video game consoles, including PlayStation 2, PLAYSTATION 3, Xbox, Xbox 360, Wii and GameCube.
The GamePlay
Metrics user sample includes more than 12,000 households with approximately 33,000 individuals.
Nielsen GamePlay Metrics uses PC data collected from the Nielsen's Video Game Tracking Survey. Video Game Tracking is a weekly online survey of 1200 gamers 7 - 54 years of age. Qualifications include ownership of a console or PC, play video games at least 1 hour per week and have purchased at least one or more video games in the last 6 months. The Video Game Tracking online survey has been in the field for more than two years (104+ weeks).

I'm contesting the comparison between console iterations, where the success of the PS2 is used in a nonsense way to enhance the failings of the PS3.
(Also. I'll take the professional Nielsen measurements over the "me and my friends see it different" logic any day. :o)

@ Ninja - I'm not commenting on which console is weakest or strongest. Though you seem to enjoy bashing the PS3 and disregard every other point I make.

Im assuming you didn't actually read my last comment because I agreed with you.
But like you said it is interesting to see the huge chuck of players still playing their PS2 (though I dont know anyone who still does)
I think theres a difference between talking about unfavorable statistics and bashing ("ps3 is stupid and sucks lolol"). Also you must have missed the part where CNN called the PS3 "a sinking ship". Like I said, I dont think the xbox 360 is the best console, or that microsoft made all the best decisions but I still think the PS3 is the performing more poorly then the other next gen consoles.
As for the comparisons between the PS2 and PS3, its pretty obvious how people can walk away with the conclusion that the PS3 is a failure. PS2 dominated the market by a huge margin, great backwards compatibility, huge library of games. The PS3 is currently in 3rd place far from where its predecessor stood. People view the PS2 as a "success" and the PS3 far from one.
