Starcraft 2 without LAN support

No LAN multiplay
Fans of lan parties can forget of having some nice StarCraft II compos as Blizzard Entertainment didn't incorporate LAN multiplayer.

That's what Rob Pardo, senior VP of game design at Blizzard Entertainment, had to say:
...the StarCraft II development team "don't have any plans to support LAN,"
...
"we will not support it." The only multiplayer available will be on Battle.net
...
Well, I guess that sucks. Even if most people play online these days anyway.

um... how will people do competitive tournaments at events and such? This is foolish. LAN parties are still popular.

Okay, I read the comment about no LAN. Blizzard has some alternative in mind which they aren't prepared to talk about yet. So yeah... saying it has no LAN is not really accurate -- its just being handled slightly differently than what we're used to. More info to come apparently.

Multiplayer will be ONLY through battle.net as quoted in this interview

Will StarCraft II be available on consoles, or over LAN?

We got quite different answers about local area networking (LAN), where both Dustin or Sigaty said they were still discussing it, however, Pardo knew immediately: "we don't have any plans to support LAN," he said and clarified "we will not support it." The only multiplayer available will be on Battle.net.

This definitely sucks, but I doubt many people will not buy because of this?

maybe they are going to use a steam approach? Validate the game online and afterwards it activates some Lan like feature?

I would be ok with that, however you seem to have missed the part of the quote that says

The only multiplayer available will be on Battle.net.

"We want to push the client into what we think is right for them instead of giving them what they would like to have since we know better what our clients needs then anyone else. We are in fact so awesome that next game we make will not even be advertised and will send it to all addresses and charge all credit cards automatically since everyone will have to get it because we know this is right for you all"

Going EA way I see? Good luck with that Blizzard, ignoring players is not just stupid it's also suicidal from business perspective. What is next, gameguard usage on all your games?
