PSN to become payable?

Soon PSN Gold?
It seems that Sony Entertainment is considering to introduce a payable membership for the Playstation Network of the PS3 which would work a bit like the difference between Microsoft's Xbox Live Silver and Xbox Live Gold memberships.

This is what Sony's Kaz Hirai had to say about it:
SCE will further increase sales by offering users new entertainment through the combination of hardware, software, peripheral and PlayStation Network.

Especially in the online area, we are studying the possibility of introducing a subscription model, offering premium content and services, in addition to the current free services.
This was said at a presentation that also showed how PSN is gaining in popularity. A subscription fee would therefore become a possibility and also bring in some additional cash for Sony.

No doubt to be continued but if Microsoft is charging money for their service, I can see why Sony would want to do the same. Still, it would no doubt make their service less popular than it is now.

PSN will still be free, if you want the extras you pay, that is all. =3

As I said: similar to difference between Silver and Gold subscriptions on Xbox Live, but with small differences in services delivered for the standard (free) subscription.

as long as we can play online without charge thats fine by me, i pay for my broadband, i'm not going to pay again to play online withps3 games. WoW is fine because of the scope of the game, there just is'nt anything line that on ps3.

This is why Sony's the best and will surpass Microsoft in sales because they are smarter when it comes to marketing.Just adding to the online luxury whats free will still be free and you will have to pay for more luxuries.Soon the PS3 out sell the 360.The 360 can't operate long enough for gamers love it. 54 percent failure rate.

But what features are good enough to pay for a monthly fee? Or are they going to make it so when you use it you pay.....
Honestly, the PSN or Xbox live functions mean nothing to me, as long as i can play my games online with my friends and other players with ease then anything is fine with me.
But if PSN do come up with a very strange payment model for the PSN that is a hassle for free users to use, then I will go back to playing online on my beautiful PC.

I think they will start offering a new service with more funtion and leave the existing free services as is, but I am sure they will promote the payable services more for marketing reasons
