Gabe Newell slams DRM

Newell doesn't like Ubi's new DRM scheme
Valve Software's Gabe Newell has lashed out to DRM last night when he spoke at the Game Developers Choice awards. He said that people in the games industry should start looking at their products as a service to customers and that DRM just diminishes the value of what you're trying to sell:
“One thing that you hear us talk a lot about is entertainment as a service,” he said.

“It’s an attitude that says ‘what have I done for my customers today?’

“It informs all the decisions we make, and once you get into that mindset it helps you avoid things like some of the Digital Rights Management problems that actually make your entertainment products worth less by wrapping those negatives around them.”
After his speech, the whole room, packed with developers and "industry luminaries", started cheering.

Last week, Ubisoft's servers were under attack from disgruntled hackers who didn't like the company's new DRM anti-piracy measures that requires users to have a permanent internet connection in order to play (even in singleplayer mode).

Well, he's got a financial interest in slamming it, 'cause what's the alternative to DRM, from a game-pusher's perspective? Steam, that's what...

Personally I think he is a hypocrite, on the one hand he is slamming DRM while the other is forcing his own DRM on people, even people who buy their software from suppliers other than steam. If you don't have an internet connection, which some people do not have, granted it's a small minority, then you are screwed, so what's the difference if you're one of the minority then none.
