SOPA protest blacks out the internet

Posted on Wednesday, 18 January 2012 by Speed, source: Fragland
SOPA and PIPA, the controversial US acts that are under debate in the US, are causing quite the stir.

First up, several websites have blacked out today as part of the protest to what's going on in the US at the moment. Sites taking part in the protest in one form or another include Bluesnews, Rock Paper Shotgun, Gamasutra, Destructoid, Savygamer, Wikipedia (US), Google, Mozilla, Reddit and many more.

Some of them mention statements like the following, as found on RPS:
Rock, Paper, Shotgun is blacked out to protest against SOPA and PIPA

We're sorry if this frustrates or angers you. Really. But it's nothing compared to what could happen were the Stop Online Piracy Act and Protect IP Act to succeed in the US.

Under those new rules, a single errant comment left by a reader could see RPS invisible in the United States, removed from search engines, ad revenue frozen, and thus destroyed. Despite Monday's news that SOPA was shelved, it's now back on the table, and PIPA is just as dangerous.

Any site that has comments, a forum, video streaming, user content in any form, is in real danger of being destroyed by SOPA and PIPA. YouTube, Facebook, Wikipedia, Twitter... The internet, as this wonderful, extraordinary, free and beautiful thing, would be broken forever.

If you're in America, contact your local Congressperson/Senator about SOPA and PIPA. If you're not American, remember similar legislation is being considered all over the world, including in the UK.

We'll be back Thursday morning, and we'll be as great as ever. We want to make sure that continues. Find out more here.
Also several sites have put up videos, giving more explanation about their frustration and why SOPA and PIPA are bad for us all. Several gaming journalists and developers have even gone so far as to boycot E3 if the ESA doesn't stop its support for these acts:

Following the huge protest, the UK games and interactive entertainment trade body UKIE has already announced they'll host an industry debate on the matter. Jo Twist, CEO of games and interactive entertainment trade body UKIE said:
"We are very much involved in the debates around Intellectual Property (IP). Our industry has a very close relationship with gamers who drive our industry and we have led the way in supplying compelling content across all formats and constantly reviewing our business models. We are proud to have this relationship and want to preserve and build on the loyalty of all gamers.

To this end we are announcing that we will host an industry debate to explore ways of positively building on the power of our products and services for game makers and players alike. This will happen in the coming weeks and will extend beyond our membership to all those involved in our innovative industry.”
Sites getting blocked out in the US because of free speech? Madness!
