Volition dev: used game sales will make our industry fall apart

Posted on Tuesday, 7 February 2012 by Speed, source: AltDevBlog
Volition Design Director Jameson Durall shows us all that game devs too can be stupid idiots.

The man has put up a blog post in which he claims that used game sales will make the entire gaming industry fall apart because game developers do not receive one dime of each used game sold.
In the end, I fully believe that we have to do something about these issues or our industry is going to fall apart. People often don’t understand the cost that goes into creating these huge experiences that we put on the shelves for only $60. They also don’t seem to realize how much they are hurting us when they buy a used game and how pirating a copy is just plain stealing. Maybe something as simple as educating them could help solve the problem…
Yes, I'm sure writers would agree that used book sales are a threat to them as well, as they too don't get a dime for a second hand book getting sold. Or car companies not getting money from second hand car sales. Or movie studios not getting money from used DVD sales. And so on.

So what makes the gaming industry so special? Nothing! It's all about companies just being greedy and wanting more money for the same effort. If Mr. Durall believes one second that banning used game sales would earn a game developer one penny more, he's living proof you don't need to be a genious to work in the gaming industry.

Oh, and while he's at it, he's also outspokenly pro a rumoured system for the next Xbox that would not play used games:
There’s another big rumor about the next Xbox console that could really start to shake things up…it won’t play used games at all! Personally I think this would be a fantastic change for our business and even though the consumers would be up in arms about it at first…they will grow to understand why and that it won’t kill them.
I do think he's got a point there. The masses usually don't think too much and once something becomes common, they get used to it and feel as if it's always been like that. Like $DLC which used to be a free service but now comes at a price.

Conclusion: there's more than enough morons out there so that if game publishers are brave enough, they could actually pull it off and ban used game sales.

Whether game developers would actually earn more with such a move is a totally different story. After all, our economy is about getting more profit year after year for shareholders, and employees are purely a cost companies don't like to see going up.

lol, a console that doesn't play games! They actually think that people will pay money for a home entertainment system that doesn't offer gaming.

Everything you can already get on a PC, Mac, iPad, iPhone and lots of other mobiles and devices. Even some of the new tv's have software installed so you can browse and stream tv from the internet.

lol, I'm sure that a huge portion of the user base think its annoying that the xbox was made for games as it gets in the way of streaming tv :D

If Microsoft adopted that approach it would be the end of the xbox and sony would laugh for years

If piracy is stealing, and used game sales give game devs (and publishers!) the same amount of revenue, then why isn't used game purchasing stealing? Oh wait... is it because both claims are ridiculous? Or is GameStop stealing their games? I don't know.

It's all very confusing if you think about it.

In short, piracy isn't stealing, it's a breach of copyright law.

In Fact they must have taken cautions for that, but people studying and learning developed techniques for copy Games, so in fact its company's fault people just learn from mistakes. And now with this Global Crisis, forget that people will support antipiracy or anti-internet rules, no way dude!
