nVidia makes your windows crash!

If you're having probs with your Vista installation, there's a 29% chance that it's caused by nVidia drivers.

Thanks to a class-action lawsuit against Microsoft, the company has released some documents that show that over 479,000 crashes of Windows Vista, or just under 29 percent of all the crashes Microsoft logged in 2007, are due to nVidia drivers despite them being listed as "Vista Capable".

Microsoft themselves don't have to laugh too hard with that though, as their own drivers are in second place with 17,9% of all Vista crashes.

The list documents "Crashes by Organization" for all file type drivers. At the top of the list is Nvidia with roughly 480,000 crashes, or 28.81 percent of the total, followed by Microsoft (17.97 percent), Unknown (17.07 percent), AMD-ATI (9.30 percent) and Intel (8.83 percent). Webroot Software (3.99 percent), Realtek Semiconductor (3.34) and Creative Labs (1.09) are the only other organizations with more than 1 percent of driver crashes on the list.
Now I can already see the ATI fanboys starting to rave, but do keep in mind that nVidia has a far larger share of the market in their hands so it's quite normal their % is higher.

Another thing that isn't quite clear from the data is how many machines actually caused all those crashes, nor which exact drivers did. So although it's interesting information, it doesn't quite give enough detail for a full analysis.

Conclusion: driver issues are a pain and Microsoft as well as all other companies could have done a LOT better when it comes to Vista support...

This is 100% true and I've experienced it first hand myself. My brother bought a laptop about 6 months ago and from the very first time we turned it on it on video games and windows aero would consistently crash or cause the computer to freeze up completely. When it did not freeze up completly it would have a message saying that some nvidia driver has stopped responding and has recovered successfully. After about a week of trying to find a solution (yes i even tried to talk to dell support) and installing various drivers the issue never went away and we eventually returned the laptop. Its a pretty common problem with nvideo 8600 in dell laptops.

This begs the question, does Dell even test there integrated product. At least do they install the OS image on the drive and see if common things are working.

I tried the drivers from laptopvideo2go back when we were having this issue but at the time it didn't help.
