America's Army: Rise of a Soldier (Xbox)
America's Army, which was released for free by the American Army as a PR stunt, has now found its way to consoles. By the end of the year, Rise of a Soldier will be released on Microsoft's green box. The first question we asked of course was why so many gamers would give money to something you can download for free on the web.
The answer to that question, which was given by Tony Van, consists out of two things, or should I say 2 modes. Where the original could only be played online, in this Rise of a Soldier you'll have a real singleplayer campaign. Here you start at the bottom of the hierarchy as complete rookie and you work your way up to become a fully fledged fighting machine.
The singleplayer campaign also consists of some RPG elements. During the missions you'll collect experience points which you can divide over seven different parameters amongst which there are strength, leadership, honor, and so on.
Also on multiplayer there will be some changes. The known maps from the original have been converted with some small changes. On top of that, the squad system has undergone some reworking, so that it becomes more important to keep you teammates alive in Rise of a Soldier.
For a game that was released a couple of years ago, America's Army still looks pretty good. No wonder when you know that it uses the - in that time - sublime Unreal Warfare engine. This doesn't mean that the game can compete with current generation console titles, but it won't look bad at all.
We don't know when to expect America's Army: Rise of a Soldier in stores. We are interested, however, to know whether Ubisoft can improve this already very popular formula.
