Ancient Wars: Sparta (Pc)
Ancient Wars: Sparta is coming in the period of the top games at the end of the year. This alone is of course not enough, but what we already know about this game is promising. This preview version also sets expectations high.
To play this game three people can be chosen from: the Spartans, the Persians or the Egyptians. Each of them has their own campaign in which you once again (re)write history. These there people all really differ from each other: style, buildings, the way they collect resources and so on. Because of the disadvantages and advantages of each people are balanced well. None of them is the best to play with, but one might fit your playing style best.
One of the greatest features in this game is the possibility to model your own units. There are standard three kinds of units: light, medium and heavy infantery. In the unit designer menu you choose which weapons they get, ranging from light to heavy weapons. Each soldier can also take a secondary weapon and a shield along. As this equipment becomes stronger, so becomes the price to train the unit.
Except for the most primitive, every shield and weapon has to be researched. An alternative for this is collecting the fallen weapons on the battlefield. By letting these be collected by your citizens, you might get access to powerful weapons early on in the game and it also lowers the price to train your units. However, this is limited to the number of weapons that was collected.
Another nice addition is the building of traps. For instance a collection of stones, placed on top of a hill, with devastating results when your enemy decides to storm the hill. The A.I. of the enemy is strong, only the A.I. of your own troops needs some patching. For instance, sometimes they get stuck in the environment.
The graphics are also great, but this will be reflected in the system requirements. The soundtrack has the same quality and reacts vividly to what happens on screen. Those who listen well, can perfectly hear what’s going, for instance, the music goes faster once an opponent is near.
In short, the making of a fantastic game. As always, it’s waiting on the definitive version, but when it’s more of this, this game could well be a candidate for the title of best game of the year.
