Battlefield Heroes (Pc)
The Battlefield series has a good reputation as online shooters, but this time the series goes a different way. After the beta got postponed already several times, the closed version now seems to be going at full speed ahead. We went in to get a quick peek.
The biggest difference with the previous Battlefield games is that Heroes is completely free. Well... completely may be a big word. It's possible to play free but those that like to have a nice outfit can buy this through Battlefunds. Also by playing a lot it's possible to earn virtual money but with these coins you can't buy everything. Additional band aids or some weapons are available though.Another difference is that Heroes is a third person shooter instead of a first person one. This is quite logical as the player's clothing, the biggest source of income for the game, has to be clearly visible. Everything looks colorful, from your clothing to the surroundings. The emphasis is on happily shooting your enemies.
While creating your character you need to choose between Royal Army or National Army. Once chosen you get another dilemma: soldier, commando or gunner. The first is a simple soldier who likes shooting with a lot of bullets, the gunner prefers bazookas and the commando knows how to hide himself and attack from the back with his knife or from far away with a sniper gun.
After you've finished the preparations, you can start playing. This is done through the web browser eventhough Heroes needs to install a couple of files on your PC. Looking for a game is done through one button and pretty soon your hero is on the battlefield. What immediately gets noticed is that at the bottom of the game there's a bar with the special properties of the class you play with which can be activated through number keys. While playing also experience points are given that lead to a next level. The higher the level, the better the attacks you can buy become. Pretty soon you'll be shooting with bullets that are on fire and burn the enemy.
Of course there are some resemblences with the Battlefield tradition in Heroes. The vehicles and team work are very important. At the moment there are as many vehicles as there are maps: three. The jeep, the tank and the airplane give fast transport to the important parts on the map and allow you to do more damage. In each vehicle there's room for multiple players and those with fear of heights better not put themselves on the wings of an airplane.
In the traditional Capture the Flag these vehicles are extremely handy and can lead to hectic events at the start of a game.
Battlefield Heroes is still in beta phase but already works swiftly. There's still quite some work to do though; more maps, classes, weapons, ... need to be added. Luckily the devs are already working on this and it looks like Battlefield Heroes will become a game I would even spend some money on. That the game is free is another added plus.
