Call of Duty 3 (Playstation 3)
Next to Tony Hawk's Project 8 there was another top title that will leave the Activision stables soon to unleash itself on gamers with an aggressive marketing campaign (at least, that's what the press map tells us) with Call of Duty 3 which will again let you explore the 40s.
Now that the landing has been sort of a success and the beaches of Normandy are free of Fritz it's about time to clean up the rest of Europe. Guess who gets to do that! As part of a squad you have to force a break from Normandy and go from bunker to bunker while dodging hundreds of bullets and debree to suddenly find yourself eye to eye with the enemy who you get on the ground thanks to the new melee attack. You regularly get to see an interactive cut-scene where you need to push the correct buttons to get rid of a German. It's a fun gimmick but whether you'll be using it much during a full-scale offensive is another question.
The single player campaign offers more of the same but is still quite enjoyable and packed with action despite the clearly scripted events. Whether you're going through tight trenches while avoiding tanks and machinegun fire, or you're taking on Germans in an abandoned farm, it's all one huge spectacle and you feel like in a big budget action movie. Of course it isn't all that innovating but why fix if it ain't broken?
Graphically the game looks mighty fine although we did see some clipping here and there. Still, that got compensated more than enough by the spectacular smoke effects. Vehicles like jeeps and bikes can now also be controlled by you and will be intensively used in multiplayer. And it's exactly there that CoD3 becomes real fun.
We had the chance to play a game against the collected Belgian and Dutch press in a new multiplayer mode which we'll call "Capture the flag in a strict order" and thanks to the brilliant working together of Zwan and Roman and despite a bunch of crazy Dutch team mates, the allied team won after a couple of minutes with the American flag rising proudly on French soil (I was in both sessions the best player *proud* - Zwan).
To redo this tour de force but on Axis side there's was just a bit too little time but we did get a decent idea on the fun you can have online with this game. It also gets noted immediately that good team work will get you further. One of the sessions (that we were watching) ended even in a draw because everyone was playing solo. Egos are remorsely punished and that's how it should be!
To avoid that the action in a multiplayer game is too spread out over the map, which is certainly bad when playing with a small amount of people, you're forced to capture the flags in a certain order. In our 4-against-4 session there was no lack of action and no dead moments. "That doesn't offer much freedom" you may think, but it does concentrate all action on one place and that's what it's all about. The same also happens in Enemy Territory: Quake Wars by the way.
Other and more classic gameplay modes are of course still present and with the addition of tanks, jeeps and funny German bikes at your disposal you'll have tons of fun while killing Germans or Americans.
