Damnation (Playstation 3)
Games that deliver an alternative history of future are always fun to play simply due to the fact that we can see what could have been if certain events would have happened differently. Damnation is such a game but will it offer more than a fun story? Developer Blueomega says it will and to prove this point publisher Codemasters sent us an early PS3 build to check it out!
Due to the version being all but complete still a lot of elements in the game were missing like dialogues, ingame movies and of course a large part of the game itself. Still this preview should give us a good first impression of what's to come.Damnation actually started as an Unreal Tournament 2004 mod on the PC which competed in the makesomethingunreal contest. Due to the positive reactions of the players the attention of Blue Omega Entertainment was quickly drawn and before anyone knew development to make it a full game on PS3, Xbox360 and PC was started with a nice sum of money from Codemasters.
The game plays in an alternative version of the Wild West where a powerful industrial plans to conquer the Union and Confederate states with the help of some very high-tech looking weapons. Of course they didn't count on you, main character Rourke. The version we played didn't reveal much about him but we did find out he's got a special vision with which he can spot heat sources. A handy ability to quickly spot enemies and take them out!
What quickly gets noticed at the start is the way how you get from A to B. There's more than one route to get somewhere and you for instance choose to get down from a moutain over the road, by hanging on cables, or by trying to descend from the rocks.
The fun thing is that you're not the only one who can be acrobatic. The team members that support you most of the time are equally handy, often walk in front and choose their own route to get somewhere. This way you can find paths you would never have found yourself.
As I said the game is a bit more modern than the Wild West we all know from the movies and this also goes for the means of transportation. Horses are passé as there are plenty of motorised vehicles. We got to have fun with a bike that has more than enough horsepower present. Also your team mates know how to drive these vehicles and this again makes it clear that quite some attention has been paid towards the intelligence of the characters.
Unfortunately multiplayer wasn't available but if the plan is to base the maps on the different locations from the single player we can expect some really great fun.
So far for this short preview. For a full review we'll have to wait for the game to be released. If the end product has the same quality as this early build Damnation will deliver a perfect mix between non-stop action and a good dose of platform gaming.
