E3 Hands On: Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood (Playstation 3)
Unexpectedly a sequel to Assassin's Creed 2 got announced and with unexpectedly we don't mean a new ero in the series but a story that continues where part 2 ended. A sequel to Ezio's life as the book of his life story contains plenty of unmentioned pages still.
The story starts in Villa Auditore, the city that ou brought back to life in part 2. After a wild sex party, Ezio still likes women, you wake up shaking and shivering. The entire city is under attack, nobody has seen how the enemies managed to get past the guards outside the gates. Quickly Ezio and uncle Mario try to gain some time by launching an attack so the civilians can escape. Ezio rushes towards the defensive walls where you get to see a first view of the battlefield.

Quickly Ezio and uncle Mario try to gain some time by launching an attack so the civilians can escape. Ezio rushes towards the defensive walls where you get to see a first view of the battlefield.
The view is astonishing, everywhere you see hostile and if we may believe the producer it's thousands of them (not that we counted them but it were A LOT). Ezio quickly starts the attack by using a cannon and take down the enemy's siege towers. It immediately delivers a different kind of gameplay than we're used to. The producer promises that plenty of such elements will be preesnt in the game to offer enough variation. We quickly get overwhelmed by the hostiles that come from behind and switch back to sword gameplay. This seems to have slightly been adjusted and quite a lot more difficult as enemies no longer attack one by one but work together.
After defeating the hostiles we get a new cinematic. Uncle Mario seems to have lost his battle and gets a closeby execution. Ezio is shattered by his loss (or wounds?) and that's the end of the first demo part.
The second thing we get to see pushes us forward a couple of years in time. We get to see Ezio but he's no longer alone. The Brotherhood has been formed and our friend no longer has to do all his dirty work alone. Thanks to an ingenious system that the devs call BAM (or Brotherhood Assassination Move) it's possible to call in help from your friends. A push on the L2 button and BAM! A series of guards get an arrow in their head. A bit further the guards get overwhelmed by assassins from above. We feared for a moment that everything would become too easy but the developer reassured us by stating that everything is limited in use and not equally powerful. As you progress you'll need to earn things and you can only have your friends do certain things. It's very important to make the right combinations.
The next thing we got to see... sorry, play ourselves... was a multiplayer mode for AC: Brotherhood. We got to control one of the eight different characters that are available and which we could equip with two different abilities going from knife throwing, smoke bombs and disguises to faster sprinting and easier blending in a crowd. During the game round itself we got a target assigned which we needed to take down without getting spotted. Who it is is still unclear in the vivid city but with some sort of radar system it's easy to find the target. If you're far away then a direction is shown and when you get closer to your target your entire radar will light up. You then have to choose a character that you want to follow and hopefully this confirms your choice. Slaying a standard civilian results in penalty points.
But where exactly is the challenge? Well, while hunting your target it can happen that you're being followed by an opponent. Act carefully, blend in now and then and commit your murder without being see is the message. Does the enemy spot you then you need to run and try to vanish unseen. The mode is like a game of cat & mouse where the tension never fades.
We didn't get to see other multiplayer game modes but we were told that several will be present, going from single to team-based objectives. The singleplayer remains single and unfortunately won't have co-op. A more immersive story was also promised, just like better graphics, more vivid cities and NPCs and countless different missions for over 15 hours of gameplay. If the devs can make up for half the shortcomings from the second game then Ubisoft has another top title ready for their portfolio.
