Fat Princess (Playstation 3)
The announcement of Fat Princess only just happened at E3 2008 and already countless feminist organisations were raising hell. Making a princess fat with pie? How socially incorrect can that be? Luckily developer Titan Studios remained deaf for the criticism and thanks to that strong attitude we got to check out the beta of this future Playstation Network title.
Those that have never seen the game will easily be mislead by the happy graphical style Fat Princess has but this is in strong contrast with the gruesome images that are displayed on your screen. Quickly the green world is drenched in blood and smothered with chopped off limbs. In the once so cute world a fierce battle is going on for the princess! The main mode of the beta can simply be explained: save the princess from your opponents. Those that play online shooters often quickly make the link with Capture the Flag but the gameplay does go a little further than brutal violence as your princess will nicely remain where she is if you don't apply tactics.
It all starts with choosing your class. You start as a normal villager but thanks to different headgear-barfing-machines you can change to whatever you would like. There are some typical RPG prototypes like magicians, priests, archers, and warriors, but the most important one is in the end the standard worker. He delivers wood and ore which which upgrade the headgear machines, creates ladders and catapults to conquer the hostile castle with, and also gives your castle the necessary defenses by repairing the main gate when damaged and cover the secret passage way.
The make kidnapping the princess more difficult you can fatten her up with pieces of pie that are spread over the map. This makes it hard work to transport her and multiple troops are necessary to lift her. In other words: a lot harder for the enemy to get going with. The kidnapping therefore often leads to the most chaotic and nerve-wrecking situations where you try to get the fat woman home.
Fat Princess is playable on- and offline, but the added bots in the offline "Save the Princess" mode are little to not controllable and you'll often irritate the hell out of yourself with their behaviour that doesn't help the situation progress for one inch. The game also has a Team Deatmatch mode but butchering your hostile opponents is a lot less exciting without the fight for the fat princess. People without friends have no need to despair: the full game comes with a full single player storyline which will be more than enough to pass the time with.
It look as if Fat Princess will bring the Playstation Store yet another new and exclusive top game. The beta still has some bugs here and there but we already forgive those with love. The nice graphics, well thought-through gameplay and a welcome portion of comedy will guarantee hours of playing fun in only a couple of weeks!
