Hands-on preview: Lost Odyssey (Xbox 360)
Lost Odyssey is the next RPG that Mistwalker Studios are prepping for the Xbox360. They're the people that are supposed to make the console more popular in Japan, and at the same time give Western gamers an equivalent of Final Fantasy or the Dragon Quest series.
With the names everything is alright already. Hironobu Sakaguchi, maker of Final Fantasy, is project leader and he's assisted by amongst others the famous composer Nobuo Uematsu. Whether the gameplay is equally good is something we've tested in a hands-on session. The first minutes of the game feeling suitingly epical. Two huge armies fight each other on an abandoned plains where you suddenly get control over your character Kaim, something that happens very fluid and natural and shows that the graphical engine is capable of great stuff. Your first gameplay moments don't last for long though, as seconds later a meteor shower destroys everything and everyone.
Strangely enough you survive this apocalypse, and quickly you notice that also other beings have been left behind. The tutorial learns how to deal with these mutants through the typical turn-based combat of this game. Also the ring system is explained: you can equip yourself and your party with all kinds of rings that all have their own special power. Also in the gameplay they are of importance. Through the right trigger you try to collide the two rings that are growing towards each other around your opponent. If you succeed your attack will be a lot harder! Together with the large amount of rings you can discover during playing this will certainly bring the necessary variation and animo during combat.
Quickly the story continues and you meet Seth, a girl that just like you survived the attack and meteor rain. Before you're called to the Council in the city of Uhar you can explore its streets in typical RPG style. Shops, an Inn, crates with items, everything is present as you would expect. The Council seems to know more about you (someone cast an Immortality Spell over you it seems) and hires you to do some missions for them, together with the non-immortal Jansen.
What follows is a quest and of course a ton of random encounters which show that the graphical and design style isn't quite surprising, but walks the typical Final Fantasy paths beautifully and well worked out. Expect immense swords, spectacular outfits and mostly véry fun, colorful and varied enemies and big bosses. We enjoyed it already!
Interesting is also that Immortals don't get new skills when they level. You'll have to link yourself with a mortal (who does learn every level) to copy his skills. A system that works pretty good as you can build your character very freely and to your own liking. Important will be to choose whether you want someone for the frontlines (a fighter) or for behind the lines where they get better protection, as this is an important part of the tactics.
The first hours with Lost Odyssey were very promising eventhough just like with Blue Dragon you shouldn't expect too many innovations. The story does feel a lot more mature and managed to makes us even curious for the rest. The gameplay itself seems to come close to that of Final Fantasy quality and in a couple of weeks the game will be available in stores after which you can of course expect a full review.
