Ports from console to PC and vice versa aren’t often successful, though now and then a game is released that stands out from the crowd of ports. Lost Planet: Extreme Condition is on its way to become one of those exceptions.
For those who don’t know the Xbox360 version, I’ll quickly summarize the story: Wayne, the main character, suffers from acute amnesia. During his search for his memories on an icy planets, he encounters multiple enemies, from normal humans to big insects.
The demo that was at our disposal was quite challenging and played smoothly. However, there aren’t a lot of new things in the PC version, apart from a few new multiplayer maps, enhanced graphics and special effects. Next to mouse and keyboard this game can also be played with a controller, if you would want this. Keyboard and especially mouse are in this case to the best choice.
The console characteristics aren’t completely gone. For example, some indications will still be displayed as buttons of the Xbox360 controller, instead of the right key of your keyboard. Luckily, Lost Planet does use the basic controls for PC shooters, so veterans of the genre will easily (be it blind) find the right keys.
The graphics look very nice on PC, it even looks better than in the original Xbox360 game. Music and other sounds are also fantastic, with a good sound installation you will be able to profit optimally from this. However, you do need a strong system to be able to play this game. To give you an idea: minimum video requirements are pixel shader 3.0 and 256 MB video memory (Geforce 6600).
This looks good, but we’ll have to wait and see wether the troubles the Xbox360 version had to deal with, will reappear in the PC game or not.
