Table Tennis (Xbox)
Rockstar is known for violent games like the Grand Theft Auto series, Manhunt and the upcoming Bully. So imagine the Fragland crew's surprise when they announced Table Tennis. A game that's as far from violence as prehistoric man from space travel.
Well, it seems that the guys at Rockstar are huge fans of Table Tennis, otherwise known as "ping pong". It seems every office has its own table tennis table and when they started looking at a way to test the Xbox360's capacities, their favorite free time occupation was the perfect solution: a small room, two players and a little audience!
And how right they were. Table tennis is concentrated on two players with in between them a small table and a little ball so you can really push the limits there and add incredible amounts of detail as you don't have to worry too much about the surroundings.
This results in a graphically stunning game if you look at the details. Ok, you don't get to see wide areas filled with life, but instead you get extremely details facial animations and clothing that react on the movements of the players. It really does like mighty fine!
But of course Table Tennis was created as a tech demo and we really don't want to pay any money for beautiful graphics if there's nothing more to it. So, Rockstar added gameplay to make it possible to sell this title.
And how does this play out? Great! Playing against the Xbox360 is of course something you can do, but once you start gaming against your friends, the addictive nature of this title really comes forth!
Rockstar has managed to make Table Tennis the perfect game for a couple of minutes relief, just like with real Table Tennis (except if you play competition of course).
All the effects you can give to the ball in real life are present and the controls are so perfectly done that it won't take more than 10 minutes to get the hang of it.
And what about atmosphere? 2 guys and a ball doing "pong" doesn't really sound all too exciting, now does it? Well, Rockstar has added a very nice soundtrack and once you start getting some decent rallies, music will start getting louder and louder and your adrenaline levels will really go through the roof! Great stuff!
Half an hour of playing Table Tennis was enough to start beating the crap out of Rockstar's PR representative and even made me start thinking of actually buying an Xbox360 system only to be able to play this game! And then you have to remember that Table Tennis will be on sale for the budget price of €39,95!
