Test Drive Unlimited (Pc)
Hawaï... Who hasn't caught himself daydreaming about the white beaches, blue ocean and waving palm trees? I sure have, so I was exited to give this game a preview spin.
That wasn't the main reason though. The main reason was my infinite passion for beautiful sportscars. Ferrari's, Laborghini's, Zonda's I like them all. That's why it's a pity I'm just an ordinary guy, so the chance of me driving around in one of those works of art is exactly the chance of me winning the jackpot.
But enough about my dreams, let's talk some more about this game. Test Drive Unlimited is unlike any other racer I've ever played. On one hand you've got the regular stuff like the races, buying cars and so on. But on the other hand there's a link through the internet wich will make it possible to cruise around with other players on the immense island of Oahu or race them to earn money.
And allthough this doesn't all sound very overwhelming, I assume that this could enhance the sense of reality in the game, if correctly applied by the developers. The online link will serve adouble purpose, as it will also deliver monthly updates with new cars or upgrades for you to enjoy.
And speaking about the cars, they handle pretty good for a game that doesn't pretend it's a superrealistic racing simulator. Not that I can compare with their real life counterparts, but when you put the pedal to the metal with a 700bhp monster under the trunk you it to go fast, really fast. You'll have to be carefull not to hit traffic though because there are some people in uniform on the island that will not hesitate to take some of that hard earned money off your hands if you do.
The motorcycles that are in this game weren't as enjoyable as far as I'm concerned. They handle very funny when using your arrowkeys but when you use a controller with joysticks, or a steering wheel, that improves a little. The number of bikes isn't that large either, wich emphasizes that the game was built mostly around the cars.
Yes, I keep coming back to the cars but only because it's the best point about the game, and what a point it is. Allmost every supercar on sale for the moment is included in the game, with some legendary oldtimers as an extra. All these cars are incredibly detailed, including the engine sounds and the cockpits.
And I've seen a lot of the cockpits in this game, because when you look at it from that point of view, all you need to believe you're in that tropical paradise is a little sun and some wind blow through your hair.
With an incredible choise in cars or bikes and an entire true-to-life island to explore, you're bound to be playing this game for at least a few hours. The online features will add some time to that as well wich should make this game something to look out for, especially if you're a petrolhead like me.
